Menu Foods Recall Update
Recalled pet foods contained a chemical used to make plastics, but government tests failed to confirm the presence of rat poison, federal officials said Friday.
The Food and Drug Administration said it found melamine in samples of the Menu Foods pet food, as well as in wheat gluten used as an ingredient.
Cornell University scientists also have found the chemical, also used as a fertilizer, in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat that died after eating the company's wet food.

Dog Saves Life Using His Version of Heimlich ManeuverToby, a 2 year-old golden retriever reportedly rescued his owner Debbie Parkhurst, 45 of Maryland after she was choking on an apple. Parkhurst attempted to perform the Heimlich maneuver on herself. However, after a failed attempt Toby came to the rescue, pushing her to the ground with his paws and consequently dislodging the apple from Parkhurst's throat. For the complete story click here

Pup Update
We took Bryson to the vet last week for his third set of vaccinations and his monthly weigh in. Turns out he gained 11 pounds in 3 weeks and now weighs 35 lbs at 3 months!! Still happy and healthy. He is currently sitting next to me waiting patiently. I promised him a trip to the beach on this beautiful day. More updates coming soon! :)

South Carolina Dog Team Locates Lost Boy Scout in Blue Ridge Mountains
A South Carolina woman and her search and rescue dog Gandolf found lost Boy Scout Michael Auberry in the rugged Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina today around noon. Michael had been missing since Saturday after wandering off from the Boy Scout group he was camping with. What an amazing discovery! We'll update you as we learn more. But how thankful Michael and his family must be for this rescue volunteer and her dog Gandolf!
UPDATE: South Carolina Search Dog Team Member Misha Marshall was the handler for Gandolf ,who scented out Michael, saw him in the distance and alerted Marshall to the boy's location. We covered the Search and Rescue Association of South Carolina in an 2005 article, but if you'd like to learn more about this fantastic organization click here.

The Perfect Pee Spot
Every puppy searches for the perfect spot to pee. Unfortunately that spot is sometimes in the house. There are so many products on the market claiming to help your puppy house-train as quickly as possible. However, I came across one that seems pretty effective as well as creative. It's called the PuddleStopper Indoor Potty. It is basically a patch of artificial grass with a detachable vinyl underlying to catch what leaks through the grass. He's registered with papers. He is not neutered. He weighs aprox. 95 pounds. He's always been an outdoor dog. His hips are in good condition. He's very gentle and good with children. He has had occasional seizures in the past couple if years. The vet says it's common and that there are pills available to control them but he has never had the pills.His dog house comes with him if you want it. He is FREE to a good home. Pet Food Recall
Menu Foods, an Ontario, Canada-based company that produces pet food, said Saturday it was recalling dog food sold throughout North America under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. The food is distributed by major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway. An unknown number of cats and dogs have suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, the company said. Two other companies — Nestle Purina PetCare Co. and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. — said Saturday that as a precaution they were voluntarily recalling some products made by Menu Foods.
The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches from Dec. 3 to March 6.
A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates is available from the Menu Foods Web site, http://www.menufoods.com/recall. The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information — (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708.
Menu Foods' chief executive and president Paul Henderson told the Associated Press on Friday that the company was still trying to figure out what happened.
Sarah Tuite, a company spokeswoman, has said the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, which has since been dropped for another source. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

Zawisza added that even if wheat gluten is the source "it doesn't necessarily mean the wheat gluten per se. It could be another substance associated with the wheat gluten."

Give a Dog a Home!
Here's info on some great dogs that need new homes due to extenuating circumstances. If you are interested in adopting a dog, these two are worthy of your consideration!
Chloe's owner had to move to a nursing home which did not allow pets. The dog is living right now with the family of one of my staff members. However, they already have a lot of other pets and the residing dog does not tolerate Chloe at all. Chloe three years old. She is very sweet and gets along well with other pets, including cats, and people (behavior with children not known). She is a black Labrador retriever with no tail. She has been spayed and is current on all of her shots.She comes with all her medical records, toys, treats, food, a bed, and leash.She likes to be inside with people and then taken for walks. All she asks for in return is love and attention :) She is a very sweet dog and deserves a loving home. If interested please get in touch with Katherine at 843-708-1418.
Phoenix is a 1 - 2 year old German Shepard. She was rescued in December and gave birth to 10 puppies on January 5. All puppies have homes, but Mom still needs a loving home to go to. She is 84 lbs, has had her shots, but is Heartworm positive. She is being Spayed on March 20. She loves people and is very playful. She also loves walks so she can smell every mailbox and sign on the way. She has had some training and can sit and laydown when told and is housebroken. She tries very hard to please her person. Beach Bums!
Last week we took Bryson to the beach. He absolutely loved it. He played in the sand and in the water. He was a very good boy and never wandered too far. However, his favorite thing was collecting seashells and sorting them into a pile...such a character! He also had a vet appointment last week and I am happy to report he is nice and healthy 23 pounds!! He is growing incredibly fast. That's all for now, I will keep you all updated on his progress!

A Book You and Your Dog Can Live By
In my search to find information that could help me with my new puppy I came across what seems to me to be a dog owner's best friend. It is called The Dog Bible. It is a book written by Tracie Hotchner (a life-long dog owner) to help you and your dog live a happy healthy life.
It has the necessary helpful tips from house training to doggie safety. It also includes a chapter written just for kids to help a child understand the responsibilities and safety measures that go along with owning a dog. The Dog Bible also includes interesting topics such as dog psychology and administering CPR to your pup.
So, if you're like me and have a new puppy or if you have a dog that you think could even slightly benefit from this book I would definitely recommend it! :) The Dog Bible can be purchased from amazon.com

The yard has an invisible dog fence and they welcome tenants with well behaved dogs. If you know of anyone looking for a nice home with a yard and view, please pass this information on.
The Carothers family is moving to PA, but hopes to move back to the lowcountry in a few years. So this would be a great option for someone looking for a relatively long term rental.

German Shepherd Needs Home
This is Falco, he is an 11 year old AKC registered German Shepherd. Robin Ramsey rescued him from an abusive owner. He is a very good dog; he listens well to commands and is very social with other dogs and children. He is up to date with all his shots and heart worm and is neutered. Very sweet loveable big lug of a dog. He came from Penn. where for the last 8 years he was chained to a wall of a garage, so he needs a great home with a yard. He is very loveable and needs a home where he isn't left all by himself for long periods of time. He needs a home without a cat. Please help Falco find a good home, he deserves one.

Scooby-Doo Creator Dies
Iwao Takamoto, the creator of Scooby-Doo died Monday at the age of 81.
Takamoto was a great person with an incredible spirit. He learned to draw with the tutelage of fellow internees when he was sent to the Manzanar internment camp in the California desert during World War II. He was able to turn this experience into something good and create the most well-known of dog cartoon characters. Not only did he create the beloved character of the clumsy Great Dane, but he also developed Astro from The Jetsons, Muttley, the Hanna-Barbera mixed breed, and Lady in Disney's Lady and the Tramp.

Doggie Diet Pill
Looks like a diet pill for dogs has been approved by the FDA folks. Apparently it diminishes the dog's appetite. I don't feel really good about this because I'd rather see more programs encouraging exercise rather than a quick fix. Exercised dogs are happy and healthy dogs. There's certainly a connection between the human obesity epidemic and the growing cases of obesity in dogs. What's next? Gastric-Bypass for Dogs?
And I'm a bit scared about humans getting this prescribed for Fido and taking it themselves to lose a few pounds. It's not a far fetched idea considering the current rage in Hollywood dieting is actually a supplement for race horses.

I just heard about artist Pawlick (a pun on Pollock, no doubt) who creates wonderful geometric mosaics with dog food. You wouldn't think that these pieces would do as much for the human senses as the canine, but they truly are lovely little works of art. His artist statement is below. Read more about Pawlick here.
With my dry dog food works, I create the unexpected from the everyday, turning the average into the extraordinary.
A creative challenge to both inspire fresh thought amongst viewers and to assist animal outreach groups brought about this unique and light-hearted medium. Faced with a limited chromatic palate, I use basic foreground geometries and substratal patterns of flow to balance and overcome the inherent limitations therein. Finding the balance in each piece in turn inspires me to accept that challenge anew with every new creation.
Tactile in nature, my mosaics present an inviting and uniform blend of organic warmth and whimsical surprise, each piece being common in construct yet divergent in design. With no other such works to inform my creations, I enjoy the challenges of finding and overcoming the boundaries of materials and scale by means of my own creative vision.

Registration for The Trot for the Cure Now Available
On January 7, 2007, the third Trot for the Cure, a fundraiser for canine cancer research, will take place at Magnolia Gardens. It's an afternoon of fun with your dog and dog friends, to help raise money for scientists to find better treatments and cures for cancer in our dogs. This year will be even better than last, with more specialists coming from UGA to answer questions on health issues, as well as cancer, and more dancing from the Dixie Dancing Dogs out of Atlanta! The barbecue, Southern Que-N-Stew is delicious as ever, and there'll be lots of raffle prizes.

A Bit Worried
I'm sure that most of us have heard by now that the PETS Act has been passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Though I was initially extremely happy about this and felt like it was a true victory I'm beginning to wonder if there's any real bite to the bill. It's easy to think that with the passing of the bill states are now required by law to assist people with pets in natural disasters. But in a closer examination of the language, it seems that states are merely required to CREATE a disaster PLAN for people with pets. It does not look like states will be required to enforce this plan. I'm no lawyer so perhaps I'm missing something. Regardless, when the SC disaster plan for pets is revealed we should start asking how the state expects to enforce the plan.

Royal Treatment
England's Former Home Secretary David Blunkett revealed in his new book that Queen Elizabeth cuts up food for her corgis and feeds them with utensils. Apparently Blunkett, who is blind, was seated next to the Queen for an offical dinner. When she noticed that he was having difficulty cutting his meat she offered her asssitance, telling him that she often does it for her two dogs.
Horse and Hound
Despite being VERY disappointed that Laura Bennet, one of the Project Runway contenders, is NOT a dog lover (she was practically squeamish when designing an outfit for a dog during one of the challenges) I still love her personal style. She's classic, a bit opulent and is always sporting riding pants when she wants to be her version of "casual and comfy." I wish she realized how close horse and hound are in fashion and showed a little more love for canines. Well, at least J.Crew threw us dog lovers a bone. I purchase an insane amount of Febreze. AAA has named Charleston the most pet-friendly city in South Carolina in its new travel guide for pet owners.
“Traveling With Your Pet: The AAA PetBook” lists 13,000 hotels and accommodations nationwide that allow pets.
“Nearly 70 million U.S. homes have at least one pet, a sizeable and lucrative market segment for the travel and tourism industry,” said Bill Wood, executive director of AAA Publishing.
According to Wood, 28% more hotels are pet-friendly now than were in 2003. The Travel Industry Association claims 29 million travelers take their pet with them; 78% of those pets are dogs. TIA found hotel pet policies affected 35% of those surveyed on their decision for lodging.
Charleston has 25 lodgings that accept pets. Although the city is No. 1 in South Carolina, it was not among those ranked nationally. The No. 1 pet-friendly city in the United States is Houston, which boasts 108 pet-accessible lodgings, three off-the-leash dog parks and 20 emergency veterinary hospitals.

I'm so happy about this one... us large dog owners have a VERY difficult time finding accommodaitons when traveling. Glad hotels are learning that most of the time the bigger the dog does not mean the bigger the damage.
